What Is A Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge is a restorative solution designed to replace one or more missing teeth by bridging the gap left behind. The bridge uses adjacent teeth as anchors to support a false tooth in between, creating a natural-looking and functional result. Dental bridges help restore your smile, prevent surrounding teeth from shifting, and improve your ability to chew and speak. We use high-quality materials to ensure that your bridge looks and feels like natural teeth.

To create a dental bridge, your dentist will first assess your oral health and the adjacent teeth to ensure they are healthy enough to support the bridge. The adjacent teeth are shaped as dental crowns that will anchor the false tooth. After taking an impression or scan of your teeth, a custom bridge is designed to fit seamlessly into your mouth.. Once the bridge is fabricated, it is securely cemented to restore both the aesthetics and functionality of your smile.

A Maryland Bridge is a long term temporary option that employs two natural abutment teeth, one on each side of the gap. However, while a traditional bridge uses dental crowns on the abutment teeth, a Maryland bridge uses a framework of either metal or porcelain that is bonded onto the BACKS of two adjacent teeth. Like a traditional bridge, a Maryland bridge can only be used when you have a natural tooth on each side of the gap caused by the missing tooth or teeth. Typically used as a long term temporary option, until an implant or traditional bridge could be done as long as your bite allows enough space.

What Are Dental Crowns?
Crowns have also been referred to as caps. Dental crowns are fixed prosthetic restorations made to restore a damaged tooth to its original shape and size. They are permanently cemented on teeth that have cracked, extensively decayed or otherwise been damaged. Crowns are custom made to fit over each tooth. They can be made of a variety of different materials, including ceramics, porcelain-and-metal, or resin.

When Are Dental Crowns Used?
Crowns are installed to perform several important functions. Crowns support or replace a structure that no longer works on its own. They protect weak teeth, restore broken teeth, prevent cracked teeth from breaking further, and support teeth that have large fillings. Crowns restore the appearance, shape, and alignment of a damaged tooth. Crowns are made to look like natural teeth, so they don’t stand out.

What Is A Filling?
A filling is a way to restore a tooth damaged by decay back to its normal function and shape. When you get a filling, we first remove the decayed tooth material, clean the affected area, and then fill the cleaned out cavity with a filling material.

By closing off spaces where bacteria can enter, a filling also helps prevent further decay. Materials used for fillings include a composite resin (tooth-colored fillings), porcelain and an amalgam (an alloy of mercury, silver, copper, tin and sometimes zinc). At Eastern Shore Dental Care, we use composite resin.

Which Type of Filling is Best?
No one type of filling is best for everyone. What’s right for you will be determined by the extent of the repair, whether you have allergies to certain materials, where in your mouth the filling is needed, and the cost. Considerations for different materials include:

  • Composite (plastic) Resins are matched to be the same color as your teeth and therefore used where a natural appearance is desired. The decay is removed and the material is placed directly into the area where the decay was removed from and hardened with a light.
  • Porcelain Fillings are called inlays or onlays and are produced in a lab and then bonded to the tooth. They can be matched to the color of the tooth and resist staining. A porcelain restoration generally covers most of the tooth.

If decay or a fracture has damaged a large portion of the tooth, a crown, or cap, may be recommended.

Dental veneers (sometimes called porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates) are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth changing their color, shape, size, or length. Dental veneers are typically made out of porcelain.

Dental veneers can be made from porcelain or from resin composite materials. Porcelain veneers resist stains better than resin veneers and better mimic the light reflecting properties of natural teeth and are stronger than resin veneers. If you are interested in seeing how these could look into your mouth as your dentist about doing a “wax up” mold for your mouth.

What Can Dental Veneers Fix?
